Is your bank account still keeping pace with your life?

John Dentry, Product Manager at Pay.UK

Going to university, moving into your first home, or switching jobs, can all reshape what we need from our finances. Yet for many people, the first bank account that they opened years ago can remain unchanged, even when their priorities, spending habits, and expectations have evolved.

That is not necessarily a problem. If your bank account is still meeting your needs, and has done so for a long time, there is every reason to stick with it. Fortunately, the UK banking market is competitive, varied, and increasingly shaped by digital tools, customer service, savings rates, rewards, and everyday money management features. As your life evolves, it is worth asking whether your bank account still supports the way you live.

This is something we see clearly through the Current Account Switch Service. People are often willing to make significant financial decisions, from moving home to changing jobs, but the bank account at the centre of their day-to-day finances can sometimes be left untouched.

That appears to be changing. In the first three months of 2026, the Current Account Switch Service facilitated nearly 320,000 switches, a 43% increase compared with the same period last year. This suggests more people are taking the opportunity to review whether their account is still right for them.

For Samson Dada, a publicist in Manchester, starting a new role prompted the reassessment: “I’d been with the same bank for over 20 years and honestly, I never thought about switching. It was just habit and felt comfortable. However, when I started a new role, it felt like the right moment to review my finances and look for something that suited me better.”

Many people might recognise that feeling. It is easy to carry on with the same account out of habit, even when your financial needs have changed over time.

Since launching the Current Account Switch Service over a decade ago, we have facilitated over 12.7 million switches and successfully redirected 177.9 million payments. The Service exists to make switching free, quick, and easy for people who find an account that better suits their needs.

The point is not that everyone should switch, it is that everyone should feel confident they have the option to do so and feel empowered to ensure their bank account is working for them.
